There’s been a lot of talk lately about the healthy state of Wellington’s property market with vendors attracting great prices.

Let’s have a look at what makes our capital city a great place to live.

Quench your thirst: Wellington is not just New Zealand’s political capital city, it also prides itself on being the country’s coffee capital, and craft beer capital, so you won’t go thirsty. When it comes to coffee there are countless cafes but also more than a dozen roasteries so your morning pick-me-up is truly local.

There are two quick ways to get an overview of Wellington’s craft beer culture. The first is to follow the craft beer trail – download the map from www.wellingtonnz.com, the other is to visit Beervana, a gathering of the best of Wellington’s and the country’s best craft brewers. This year’s Beervana is scheduled for August 11-12. If wine is more your thing, it’s a short drive over the hill to the wineries of Martinborough.

Sate your appetite: Sitting happily alongside the city’s best beverages, is Wellington’s outstanding café and restaurant culture. From great suburban cafes dotted right across the Wellington region to cheap eats and fine dining, you won’t go hungry. Meander the restaurant strip of Courtenay Place, try the waterfront precinct or Cuba St. Wellington’s compact central city means you’re never more than a few steps away from a great meal. For something different you can hit the Wellington Night Markets on Friday and Saturday nights to sample the city’s best food truck fare.

Empty your wallet: Wellington has excellent shopping precincts around the central city, showcasing big brands such as David Jones to smaller local designers and boutiques such as Mandatory and Kow-tow, as well as fantastic vintage and second-hand options. On Saturday mornings make sure you hit the Underground Market underneath Frank Kitts Park for arts, crafts and clothing.

Expand your mind: Wellington has famed for its culture and arts scene, with a vibrant theatre scene as well as outstanding galleries and museums. There’s Te Papa of course, but make sure you pay a visit to the excellent Museum of Wellington. Come September, the city floods with fashion fans for the World of Wearable Art shows. A visit to Carter Observatory in the Botanic Gardens is also a must-do.
