Play dough is a classic go-to to keep the kids occupied on rainy school holiday days. Here’s a recipe to make it that’s simple enough for the kids to get involved, with supervision.
1½ cups of flour
½ cup of salt
2 tbsp of cream of tartar*
1 tbsp of oil
Food colouring
½ cup of boiling water (add a little more if the dough is too dry)
Combine the dry ingredients together in a bowl. In a separate jug or bowl (not plastic as the food colouring may stain) combine the boiling water oil and food colouring.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix till combined into a pliable dough.
For different colours either make multiple batches or split the dry ingredients into equal parts. Then do the same to the wet ingredients adding different colours to each one.
* Cream of tartar makes the dough stretchy and pliable. If you don’t have it you can try replacing it with 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice. You may need to play around with quantities to get the right texture.
Have fun and enjoy the school holidays :-)
